TIE-12206 Research Seminar on Startup
Software Engineering
(4 credits)
Time: Wednesdays 4.9 - 18.12.2013 at 12-14
Place: TC 114
Place: TC 114
A growing trend in
industrial software engineering is that new software products
and information
services are developed under conditions of notable uncertainty.
This is
especially visible in startup enterprises which aim at new kinds
of products
and services in rapidly changing social web, where potential
customers can
quickly adopt new behavior. This
trend has resulted in a software engineering paradigm (called
here Startup
Software Engineering, SSE), where the development and the usage
of a product or
service are not separated, but merged into a fast
build-use-measure-learn
cycle. This is in sharp contrast with existing software
engineering paradigms
which assume that requirements have been elicited before the
actual development
starts, and which emphasize controlled process rather than fast
delivery.
The
purpose
of the seminar is to map out the current knowledge on SSE, both
from
the viewpoint of technical solutions and from the viewpoint of the
development
process and its management. Since this a new topic in software
engineering
research, the seminar is expected to have a flavor of preliminary
research,
rather than a traditional literature review seminar. The students
will go
through existing material related to the topic, interview startups
in Tampere
region, and identify practices and technical solutions that
support SSE. These
practices and solutions are refined into patterns using the
pattern workshop
method. The seminar program
consists of introductory lectures (about 4h), student
presentations and
discussion sessions on related literature topics (about 10h), and
pattern workshops (about 20h).The seminar is intended primarily for PhD students. The language of the seminar is English. The number of participants is limited. If you are interested to participate, please send email to Kai Koskimies, kai.koskimies@tut.fi.
