Hi,
A seminar,
Community Experience in Open Source Projects, is arranged during the
spring term 2013. The course covers aspects of community driven
development, free/libre and open source software (FLOSS) and the
usability and the user requirements of FLOSS projects together with
their development approaches.
During the course each student gives a seminar presentation. The
participants get community experience and get to practice community
participation by taking active part in an existing FLOSS project of
their own choice. 4-6 credits eligible for post-graduate studies are
available based on the student's contribution.
The seminar meets on Thursdays 2-4 PM, during periods III and IV. We
take a kick start with two extra kick-off sessions on 3.1.2013 and
8.1.2013 2-4 PM. To register, contact terhi.kilamo@tut.fi. The place
will be announced as soon as the room reservation system is back
online.

Are qualitative methods of any use in research on software systems?
Department's next research meeting is on Tue 18.12 at 13:15 in room TC103.
* Presenter: Essi Isohanni
*
Topic: Are qualitative methods of any use in research on software systems?
Essi's briefing:
"I will extremely briefly tell about the work related to my PhD thesis that is settled in the field of Computer Science Education Research. In this work we have followed the Naturalistic Inquiry paradigm (Guba & Lincoln) and the Grounded Theory approach (Strauss and Corbin). If there's time, I will also give a couple of other examples of using similar approaches in CSER.
This short presentation is intended for those not familiar with qualitative approaches and I'm not planning to go into details or spend a lot of time talking myself. Instead, I would like to open a discussion on whether this kind of methodology could be useful in the research of other topics than education in our institute."
